Today, I'm going to be speaking to a coach who specializes in time management and productivity and all these things that are really important when you run-in a business. Her name is Alice Art now, and we're gonna dive into what she does and how she uses her skills and her expertise. To build freedom into her own business.

So Alice, welcome. Thank you for joining me today. Would you mind just introducing yourself and letting the listeners know a little bit about who you are, what you do, and where you are right now, because you are not here in the UK, are you?

Alice Dartnell [00:02:01]:

No. No. I'm not. You can tell from my than I am from the UK, but I'm not here right now. I'm actually living in Cambodia. So I'm really excited to be on this podcast. And also, I just think how cool is this, Karen? That you're in the UK. I'm in Cambodia. Yeah. We can still do stuff this. And I think that is like the power of digital and online and things like that. So, yeah, I'm so, so happy to be here. Thank you so much for having me. But, yeah, hello to your listeners. So my name's Alice. It's really difficult to always say, like, what I am, and Yeah. I'm I'm always just up to you. I'm a coach because I just do so many different things. I do coaching. I do consultancy work with organizations. I also do they have workshops for B2B or all for other business owners? And I also do that speaking, writing, content, creating, and things like that. My real fashion topic, is what I've operated in life by design, which I think fits perfectly of what you're all about as well. I'm, you know, using your business to live that life that you want. And, therefore, it's got different versions of success. Like, everyone's different. Everyone's life does different, but I really want everyone to live on their terms, like, how they want it to be. And that's what I call it. Call it a life by design, not by default, because I think a lot of us, like, get into that default mode of just doing the same or doing what we put me after or what we should do. So in particular, I've kind of like really zoned in on time management. Energy management and productivity. They're like my absolute geeky favorite subjects.

Karen Davies [00:03:35]:

I love that. And I love the fact that you call it by design because, absolutely, I think usually if you have started a business or you are wanting to create something in your in your life, the whole premise is agent on your terms, your way, all of that. And that's how we should all be living, not going through life passively, just accepting what comes our way. So I love that fact, that term that you use about life by design. I think that's great. And that's what you're doing, isn't it? You're you're actually leading by example.

Alice Dartnell [00:04:07]:

Yeah. Quite absolutely. And I think that doing it on your terms is so important in life. But also in your business as well, I actually gave a mission to the ladies on my mastermind yesterday, where, you know, one of them's got kids, you know, small kids, all within December, they should check you with the school holidays. She just couldn't work as much as August, and she was bringing herself up. And I was like, You know that you've got your own business. You don't have to do Monday to Friday night of fight. You can make it work for you. Like, if you don't wanna work in August, you don't have to. Like, I'd work in August. I went back to Japan to see my family. And she was like, oh my god. Yes. My business. I don't have to do full time in August, but I don't want to. It looks like It's it's like doing it on your own times. Right? So, yeah, I'm really, really passionate about that, and everyone's gonna be different. Like, I don't have kids. So I wanted August, not because it was summer holidays, and I've got kids, but because it was a good time for me and my mom go to Japan where she's from and and see a family that we've had something for 4 years. Like, that for me is my terms. That for me is my life by design. Like, I just I love travel so much. And I can always knew that I want you to business that I could do with my passion for travel at the same time. That to me is my life by design.

Karen Davies [00:05:19]:

We need to find that thing, don't we, that we're passionate about, that we can sort of build everything around. And the fact that you're able to go traveling to have these amazing experiences and still run your business. You know, when we talk about building in the online space, this is why this this to me kind of sums it up is because you have the ability to be able to do other things outside of work rather than having to just be at your desk all the time, you're able to kind of go out and create a life and then have work sort of wrap around that to give yourself a freedom. And that's why I know in my business, that's why I love doing what I do because essentially is building that freedom into our life so that we're not having to constantly be available and I'd be out our desks 247. And I think if we can if if we can all find that thing, that lights us up that we can incorporate in our everyday life, that we can build work around, then there's there's so much kind of power to that, I think. That's what I think then elevates who you are essentially and and raises your vibration because you're living, like you say, your the life that you wanna live rather than a life that you've just fallen into.

Alice Dartnell [00:06:43]:

Actually, I I actually call it work life blend because I'm not so hot on the term work life balance. Like, I do use it because people know what it is. When I was thinking about this, I was like, I love what I do, but like you say, I don't really change my desk 247. And also, that doesn't serve my clients. Like, if I'm coming into calls and I'm drained and just not bringing my a game, then that doesn't serve them anyway. So as I thought for me, it's like blending work and life into how I want. So the fact that I can travel, and I can holiday if I want a holiday, but some days, I don't want a holiday. Sometimes I wanna serve my clients because I love what I do. It's like for me, it's that work life blend, but having that breed and then that flexibility is just so so key for me.

Karen Davies [00:07:31]:

Because I think that's it. Now I think everybody has a different idea. As to what their perfect life looks like. And if you love the work that you do, you're going to be inclined to want to do it anyway, but it is kind of having that balance around it so that you get to have the choice. And I and I think especially if you kind of sort of call up working for an employer or you're working in corporate, whatever. You don't necessarily have that choice. You have to kind of live by other people's rules when you're when you're in the world of work and and and the career ladder you're on and all of that stuff. But but I think the moment you step into the world of entrepreneurship the game changes because you get to be more in control. And I think that's the thing that's really important, like, whether it's in your in your business, in your career, in in your personal life, whatever, it's having that control. It's you kind of almost dictate in how you want to live rather than the other way around.

Alice Dartnell [00:08:30]:

Yeah. Oh my god. A 100%. A 100%.

Karen Davies [00:08:32]:

Tell me about a little bit about sorts of what you do then because you specialize in activity and energy, don't you? So what does that mean? And how did you decide? Like, what was thing that made you think, you know what? This is where I want to niche and specialize in.

Alice Dartnell [00:08:49]:

I think, like, probably a lot of A lot of entrepreneurs, a lot of business owners. It was my own past pain and my own past me that led me to where I am today. And being obsessed with this time management, energy management productivity concept. For me, my management isn't just about managing time. It's also about managing your energy. And when I started to shift from just that time management governed by the clock, governed by your to do list, when I'm moved away from that and more into, like, the energy management side of things, that for me was a game changer. And when I mean energy management, this is just a term that I use. This is not like something that I've, like, learned from my book per se. This is just something that I started to observe that actually physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, all the different elements of energy, that impacts you. Hey, show up. And how you use your time and and your productivity. And this this shift for me came in 2019. Unfortunately, I burned out, and I didn't see it coming. And I had this, like, oh, it was severe horrendous at the time. I I kind of glossed over. I didn't realize how bad it was. And I was great at tire management, Karen. I I was so good at tire management when I was in corporate. I was always like, the person that you'd be starting. You know, that busy person, give it to them. You know, they're gonna get it done.

Karen Davies [00:10:15]:

Yeah.

Alice Dartnell [00:10:15]:

I so I had my full time business. I have a side business. I was on a board for a charity, I did kickboxing, like, even to competitions and won. And, you know, I'm definitely like that kind of high achieve of doing it all. I also was a party girl so I could go out the weekend and enjoy myself, you know, sleep when you're dead, that kind of thing. And my time management was brilliant. I was just productive and, you know, I've claimed to never watch TV because I'm just too busy. Almost like it was a badge of bloody honor. And I've done it out. And I was like, Wait. Burn out doesn't happen to people like me. I'm great at time management. And I realized that, yeah, I was. But I wasn't good at looking after my energy. Perfection, sir. People please are taking on too much saying yes to every party invite even though I really just needed sleep. You know, the the list is endless. And I suddenly realized I wasn't looking after myself properly. It might look like I was because, you know, I went to the gym today too. But, usually, maybe I didn't need the gym that day. Maybe my physical energy needed stretchional yoga or something more general or you know, I I've had a lot of challenges over the years, and did I actually, yeah, okay, I went to therapy, but did I actually truly crisis those emotions. And just so many different things. It the burnout really made me question, like, how I was living and how I was showing up. And the ironic thing as well is now I live more under that energy management belief. I am more productive than ever. Like, people always joke me that I get more done in a day than most will done in a week. And I'm like, yeah. Cause I know how to use my energy. I'm not just being governed by those 24 hours in a clock. You know? I'm I'm looking at my energy. And so for me, what does it mean? It's it's it's looking at your time management, but from a slightly different lens. And Sometimes when we procrastinate or maybe we don't do things, it's very unlikely because you haven't got the time. Sometimes it's because you've ever got the energy. Maybe mentally you don't have the energy. Maybe physically you don't have the energy. Perhaps you procrastinate in because just of that. Not because it's lazy. So it's often when we look at our time management issues, they're often an energy management issue. And that's why I wanted to niche down into that because I think there's a lot of time management, you know, don't know what you wanna call them. Gurus out there that are like, that's all. Right. Get up at 5. You know, stop being lazy. You gotta sacrifice TV. You you listen to these motivational things on, like, YouTube. I do in the morning, and I'm like, arth agreeing. And then sometimes I'm cringing. They're oh, no. The whole muscle grind's been there. Let me burn out. You know, and I don't believe in tactics like eat that frog, but you've gotta do the worst thing and the first thing. Doesn't always work. So that's why I niche down into looking at energy management because I I was great. It's fine management and I burnt out. I was going about it all wrong.

Karen Davies [00:13:16]:

When you when you talk about energy, actually, it's, like you say, it's, as really powerful. When you do bring that energy to the table and you are kind of working at a time where you're you're really sort of feeling your best because that's essentially what it is, isn't it? You're absolutely right. You get way more done. And for time for me, I always think is quite challenging because if I was to kind of map out my time in the day, because I do have young children, I kind of get into my work, and then I stop and then because I've gotta go and pick them up, and I've gotta be mom and all of this, and then I start again, then I start for dinner and all of that. It kind of does, affect the momentum. Like, if I'm looking at being productive in a working day, then I would be looking at the 1st part of my day when they when they've gone to school, and then I can certainly my work, and then that's where I can focus. However, that's not when I'm at my most energetic. That's not when I'm feeling my most productive know what I mean? So, like, this is your push pull kind of feel. Yes. I've got the time. Actually, I'm not feeling Yeah. Right. I really wanna do the thing that actually I've now got the time to do because my energy is not there. Yeah. Oh my god.

Alice Dartnell [00:14:30]:

Absolutely. And then we start to force ourselves And then if the energy's not there, we're full sitting. It doesn't feel right. We're probably not gonna get the results, probably not gonna be productive. We're not doing scrolling and stuff. Or we've Don't do it. And then we get to the end of the day and beat ourselves up. Yeah. And then we can't. And then that obviously doesn't help ourselves work. So confidence or any of our mindset or anything like that either. The the energy to bring to it and to the task is more important, I think, than the actual, like, time slot that you put in your diary.

Karen Davies [00:15:01]:

Yeah. 100%. 100%. I, I every now and again, I go through these spells of waking up really early. And I love it. Like, I'll wake up around 5 log, and it would just be like my, you know, my body's ready to get up. I'm ready. And I wake up and I've got this real sort of clarity. And then I sit down And if I'm doing something creative, it's so easy because it's it's been at your most productive first thing in the morning, and I sort of realized for me, that's even though I try and resist early mornings, because I've always told myself that I'm not an early morning type person, when I actually, in fact, that's when I feel more creative, things flow so much better, and I can get things done way before everybody sort of wakes up and everything, which which then puts me in a really great place mentally because I feel like I've already got out of the way things that needed to be done. And I I I can therefore relax and just bed into my day knowing full well that, you know, I I've done the I've done these things that I needed to do. And that's really early in the morning. And because I was I went through a period of time where I was doing that quite frequently, and I was finding actually I was getting more done, I was starting to think about the energy side of things. Like, he was actually I was I was thinking, which is when, obviously, I met you and you sort of said, obviously, about what you do. And I thought, there there is something here. There's something really powerful because when you're in that place of flow, it it's effortless. So just

Alice Dartnell [00:16:32]:

that's what it is really, isn't it? It's it's flow. It's the flow of energy, the flow of ideas, and people I think people forget that we're humans and that we are creatures and we're nature. And in nature, everything is sick to You know, we don't have the same season. Any, you know, who we have seasons of growth and seasons of, like, where it starts to wither and rebirth. Like, we have seasons. We have cycles. And even I realized within us, they've often heard of this Acadian rhythm, but we also have something called a non trading rhythm. And this works roughly on a 90 to a 120 minute of its cycle. And that's why you naturally get those ebbs and flows and paid central throughout the day. Now when you start to understand that and when yours are, you you might be, like, ah, in the morning, boom. That's when I'm at my creative. But I also have clients that are like, no. No. No. No. No. I'm a night owl. Like, 9 PM. That's one of my most creative. We'll utilize that then. Like, there's no rules. You know? And when you've got that flow, because you understand your own energy of some flows and when you're creative, it is just so much easier. And you can do more and give you best. And I don't need more in a kind of, like, preburner, Alice, give more. But, you know, you can show up and just enjoy it as well. You can enjoy it more when you lose blood, aren't you?

Karen Davies [00:17:55]:

Yeah. Well, it just feels easy. It just feels easy. You know, like, if you're trying to write a blog post or you wanting to smash out your social media content or you want to, like, you know, work on your online course. I mean, when I was creating my very first course, I was getting up early to get myself time in in the diary before I start my working day, and that worked really well. So I would have sort of certain days that I'd work on it, but I'd also try and steal a little bit of time in the morning before the kids got up and the house suddenly becomes a chaotic and all of that stuff. But what I realized is that I was showing up afterwards with this kind of glow because I I was kind of ahead of myself, you know, I'd already got done. Some of the stuff that I I absolutely needed to get done, it was already done. It was done first thing in the morning, and I was able to do it quicker than what I'd initially anticipated. And I think that's because because of where I was in terms of my energy levels and wake up when I'd I'd have lost water, then a cup of coffee, and then I'd sit down and boom, it would happen. And I love that. I absolutely love that. I because what I do is very creative in my work anyway. I know I know all too well when you know, you're in that moment and you just, for whatever reason, you can't just you can't do the thing that you wanna do because it's just not flowing. And maybe it's down to tiredness or, like, say, you know, you just burn out or whatever, and and that that can really derail you, I think.

Alice Dartnell [00:19:25]:

Yeah. Know what? On that note, I have to sometimes give my clients permission. So, though, if it's not, she's not flowing at the moment and you're not feeling it, press pause and come back to them. And that might be a big project, or that might be just in the moment to Danny. Like, you you didn't sleep very well, you know, that was full, and you didn't sleep very well, you know, a bit and a big Bobby stay. And the big project's the great thing that you wanna work on today. You know what? Just do easy admin. Less brain drain stuff, and then save that for another day. You can switch it up. You're allowed to do that just because, you know, you you've made this, like, almost revision to timetable schedule type things for yourself. And it's it's it's quite just like listening to yourself as well, I think. It would just Okay. How am I feeling today, am I? Am I crazy?

Karen Davies [00:20:09]:

I think tiredness is a big one, isn't it? If you're feeling tired or you've got a lot on your plate at the moment. That could be very draining. I think sometimes when you feel like that, then trying to get things done can just feel like you're walking through treacle. It's just trying, you're trying, you're trying, and nothing is quite happening or not to the level that you want it to happen. And I think you're absolutely right, you know, when that happens, you have to listen to yourself and and and go and do something else, go and do something that is a is a little bit more easier.

Alice Dartnell [00:20:36]:

Yeah. And sometimes, generally, you just need to break. Yeah. I've had times where I'm like, I'm gonna get them so tired. And I'm like, I'm just taking a take 10 minutes break. And I'll go for like a quick lap. And then I'll come back and I'm like, oh, there's so much burnout. And all I need, it's just just a 10 minute lap, you know, around the corner in nature or just get some for sure or something out of a glass. I mean, it's hard because I'm dehydrated. Just so I get similar back. Sometimes you just need a little brand bike.

Karen Davies [00:21:03]:

Because you're right. Sometimes it can just be about the grime, isn't it? If you like me, you've got young children at school, often we're given this 6 hour period between drop off and pick up. So it's like, right. Okay. I'm gonna give you a damn and just work, work, because I've got 6 hours. I've gotta make most of it. And, yeah, like I say, it's just about listening to yourself and how you're feeling and and then and then going from there, really. So who do you work with? What type of clients do you work with in your business?

Alice Dartnell [00:21:30]:

Yeah. I seem to work with business owners so small business owners, that leaders and CEOs of large companies, those are typically the people that I work with, which I never set out to do that. You know, if you can tell us your niche down and stuff, I never really particularly chose that as a niche, but I guess given the topic that I'm talking about, product to the HR management, energy management. I think it's probably just natural that they're the busiest or, yeah, they've got lots on their plate. So that's that's predominantly who I work with.

Karen Davies [00:22:00]:

We were talking about your online course. So you are an operator, aren't you? So tell me a little bit about that. Tell me about your online course. What made you created online course and and also what it's done for for both you and your business?

Alice Dartnell [00:22:14]:

From day dot, when I started my business 3 years ago, I always knew some things before I even began. Number 1, I knew that I wanted an international business. Number 2, I knew that I wanted to be able to travel with the business. And number 3, I knew that I wanted to serve as many people as possible. Like, I've got huge ambitions for myself and get my message out there and just helping people with their time management and their ranking management. Because for so long, you know, if I go pre burnout, Alice, that wasn't right for me. And now I'm out of it in the other side, and I can seen people falling into that trap. And I'm like, oh my god. You know, gotta go gotta help people. Gotta help people. And to be honest, everyone wants more time. Right? I've never asked somebody, like, you're happy with the amount of hours you've gotten a day. Everyone wants more time. We can't get that, but we can learn at our management and energy management. So I always knew as well that I've only got to move around in a day. And even if I never slept, I could only serve, like, a certain amount of people every day on a 1 to 1 basis. So group coaching obviously is amazing as well, but then you've got to take going further. Like, I've got, as I say, big, big plans. I wanna serve as many people as possible. And to do that internationally as well, especially when you're traveling. And at the moment, I'm now currently in Cambodia, so I'm gonna, like, complete a different time zones to the UK now. Because I I I wanna produce an online course. So I knew that from very, very early on. So even though the call's got launched this year, it's probably been like 2 years in the making. Because I've I've run the course, essentially, I'm running live 3, 4 times, and then took the best bits from it, what landed well, what didn't what worked, what didn't. Because you're getting that live feedback, and then that, all the golden stuff, that's what's going into the online account management course.

Karen Davies [00:24:09]:

I think it's such a brilliant way to test out your idea before you start then sort of really pinning it down into a course at the end of it, being able to kind of run it live, like you say, get live feedback, get those insights, get people on board so that you know at the end of it that not only is there a need for the thing that you're creating, you have created something that's that's specific to the needs of the people that that within your live program so that you can then obviously serve really well through your online course. And I think that's what is so important. And you're absolutely right when it talks about when you talk about creating impact because you're so limited in capacity when you're sort of working with with people, you know, there's only so many people that you can coach every day in a week and a month in a year. And so, like, say if you're somebody that really wants to kinda get you out there and create the impact that you know you can create, it makes sense to sort of put something together so that you can automate that in order to be able to serve more people. So how how are you finding having an online course now? Is that helping you with your traveling is like giving you the freedom that you'd hoped it was going to give you, what has your experience been?

Alice Dartnell [00:25:25]:

So I'm still very much in the early days of, like, having recently launched the calls. But for me, I really do see this as being, like, my signature course. This is what I'm calling it. I think I call it signature course because as I said, you know, I did 3 years of research and working with people and put all that into it. So this is all, like, my signature teachings and all my, like, different theories and stuff like that. I'll put all that when I'm popped into this package. And, yeah, I really wanna use this to, as I say, to help people as far and wide as possible. So so far, we've got students from, like, think we've got students from the UK obviously, but we also got students from the Middle East. And I just love that as well that it's starting to become international. It's starting to, build a community around it as well because it also gets I've also constantly accompanied it. With, an exclusive group as well so they get extra hands and support from me and they can ask questions. So how cool is that? You know, you can bring community together internationally as well. So for me, it's it's, yeah, it's it's about serving so many values, I suppose, within my business of helping people supporting people, connecting people, and also, ultimately, giving me a bit of a bit more freedom. So I'm not chained up my desk. So when, you know, one of my students logs on and it is is at a time that's convenient for them, it's not necessary convenient for me. I can be at sleep. I can be working with another client, but they're getting what they need at that time with the information that they need from the course. Right? That for me is the freedom that I'm aiming for. And, yeah, I'm just just gonna keep building it and building it and spreading the word about it.

Karen Davies [00:27:09]:

And you're absolutely right on you. It's it's a case of you're you've packaged up all of this good stuff that you know, that you know is going to make a difference, that you know is going to have a positive impact on other people's lives. But you're not always going to be available in order to share that with them, but at least with an online course, they can log in and they can access what they need at a time that suits them. And I think, again, of this power in that because you're almost kind of giving them the the the the freedom to be able to learn at their in their own time, in their own, but at their own pace, in their own home, they don't have to go anywhere. They can just consume and learn what they need at that given moment. And I think being able to do that as well is really empowering because it's empowering to them but also for yourself as well because that's what they build in for giving you the freedom. So they're not having to constantly find new coaching clients and and then be at the beck and call of those clients. I think I think there there is a little bit of, misunderstanding at the beginning. So when you create a product, whatever it is. And it could be tempting to think that I've I've built it. It's ready to go. People are gonna come. People are gonna flock far and wide. Because I've now got this this amazing thing that they can now access. But you and I both know that there's work that needs to go in today. You need to launch promoting, you need to market it. Having said that, I think there's far less work involved in that than there is having a constantly go and finding clients and to, you know, work 1 on 1 with people because you could you can obviously build that launch and that promotional strategy around your own energy, around your own time frame, when it suits you.

Alice Dartnell [00:28:54]:

I'm good. I I so, so agree with that. So I I'm gonna be really vulnerable here, and we're all an honest. And if anyone follows me on Instagram, they know how, like, tell it how it is and we're all an honest liar. But I I came at it with wrong approach a couple of months ago, a couple of weeks ago, actually. And I took August off. I don't really like that terminology, but I took August off because I wanted to go to Japan and seek my family. And I've written it into my business plan that August was gonna be a non launch month. I was gonna be can. And, also, it coincided with what would have been my wedding anniversary. And the the the the force is still quite fresh, so I didn't know how it was gonna be. So I've written this into the business plan, but the mindset, it got to mid August, and it was a scarce email, set that crap in. And it was a, oh my god. I need to I need to, like, simply remote and launch something. Even though I knew that it wasn't the right month for me, energetically. So our patents, and I saw that there was a bank holiday coming. And I was like, right. We'll tap onto that list of a list of a promotion for the bank holiday. I did it, and it didn't go very well. And I I knew that before I even started. I I knew before even I went to launch about that this wasn't the right time. I just got back from Japan. I was knackered. And also in hindsight as well. People, especially in the UK, when we got a bank holiday, we just wanna enjoy the bank holiday. With this time management coach, she's walking up onto Instagram, being like, have you had a productive week? No. I'm on my side management course. The tendency to drink from RSA in the beer garden, like, but they don't care. And then loads of people took a digital detox out of the bank holidays, we we can as well. When I was assessing this, I was like, why did you do that? You know, you were in the past in funny business plan. But I'll be honest with you, I came from a minute place of panic, and it obviously didn't work. So you're absolutely right. Number 1, you can't just build a clause and think everyone's gonna come flock in. Number 2, you do have to market it. You also gotta do it when it's right for you And that's the beauty of the Evergreen, is that if you don't make a sale bang on today, it's still available tomorrow. And it's not like a live program where you've got to get everyone through the doors by a certain time because you're starting. You know, when I've launched my mastermind, earlier this year. That was a 12 month mastermind starting in June. Well, I can't have people joining in July. We're starting in June. So there's a little bit of, you know, that pressure. There isn't that pressure of giving online calls because somebody can buy it today or they can buy it tomorrow. They can buy it in a year. It doesn't matter. And, actually, I had just somebody buy the course in enroll. And they were like, oh my god. I'm so excited about enrolling in this course. I've been watching you for, like, the last couple of months, and I really wanted to join, but I couldn't back in July, and and for her, it was a really sad personal reason she couldn't. Well, I can't dictate people's personal lives. Like, when it when there was a promotion on in July, she wanted to, but she she just physically couldn't. And I think sometimes we forget that. We we can't obviously see in the life of others. So then we go, why is Nona buying the calls? But they are watching, and it's evergreen. So it doesn't matter if they buy it today, tomorrow, next month.

Karen Davies [00:32:18]:

Yeah. What's really, interesting is we tend to put emotional feeling towards outcomes, don't we? And then we judge ourselves based on that. So when we don't make a sale or something doesn't go quite as we expected, we attach emotion and then we make a judgment that then puts us into an, a negative mindset. And think you're absolutely right. I think you have to come at it with a view of there are so many things going on in different people's lives, and and you just have to be open to the possibility, I I'm in an accountability group and I was talking to one of the guys. And and he was sort of saying we have to come at things with a with a very scientific mindset. We have to especially when you've created something for the first time, you've gotta figure out what the perfect formula is because that formula is different for everybody. What's right for my audience is not necessarily gonna be right for your audience and so on and so forth. And so you have to give yourself time and grace to be able to test and to figure out what works and what doesn't. But I think I think what you did, I know it probably came to that place of scarcity, but at the same time, you know, you've just basically validated something that you knew already. You know that if you're gonna sell something or you're gonna launch something, you have to be in the right space. Energetically in your head, you have to be in the right space. Otherwise, you're not going to get the outcomes that you're obviously hoping for So I think this is faster, a fine line between kind of almost sort of being unemotional about the outcome. Like, if one person by your course, if ten people with 15, the 100, it really just, like, don't apply it, like an emotion to that. It is what it is. You could, like you say, you can always launch a game. You can always open your doors again. It's never like a one and done scenario. You've also gotta look in on yourself and ask yourself, really, honestly, are you in the best place to launch? Because of all the work that goes into it and and expectations and stuff as well, the the we shouldn't apply emotion but we're humans and we do. So then it's like, well, okay, am I in the best place emotionally to be able to do this? Can I really bring what I need to in terms of energy to the table in order to make this launch a success? And if it's a no, then it's about sort of just, okay, well, let's just pause, try again at another point.

Alice Dartnell [00:34:51]:

But Right. I don't. Yeah. After and this goes back to what we were saying earlier, you might have time, but you might have the energy. Like, is there any time of the bank holiday weekend? Because it's not a bank holiday in Cambodia, so I didn't have the usual, like, heavy social weekend. It's about half of the time, but I didn't have the energy. Yeah. So, yeah, absolutely. We we just we need to think about that as well when it comes to our online stuff as well.

Karen Davies [00:35:15]:

So have you got another launch plan?

Alice Dartnell [00:35:16]:

I mean, it is it is evergreen. So, you know, people can purchase any time. So if they see, like, a a blog or, you know, an Instagram post and they wanna just buy it, they can. But I am actually at the moment of of recording this. It's my September celebration. September is my birthday month. So every year, this is my 3rd year in a row that I've had my September celebrations, my business is three years old. And I just thought it is a lovely way to extend the celebrations to my audience. Right, I've always always done, like, a little offer. And this year, as part of the offer, I've got 4 things on offer, but the online time management course is one of them. So I've scoop to up in my September celebrations. But again, you know, so if if people are ready yet, I'm not gonna push people into me and, like, you gotta buy now while is this offer on? Like, if they're not ready, they're not ready. And if they wanna buy next month for next year, that's cool as well.

Karen Davies [00:36:10]:

Do you have some top tips that you can offer the listeners to help them better manage their energy, be more productive, get more things done, in a way that's not going to drain them or sort of put them in that place where they just pack it afterwards.

Alice Dartnell [00:36:27]:

Definitely. Definitely. The first thing that I would say is it's really easy to just shoot straight into, like, practical tips, you know, get this plan. I'll do this. But again, it's really like clock time management. What I'd say is First of all, decide what truly matters because I look back to Pre burner, Alice, and I definitely was busy for busy site. On a technique was doing stuff that didn't really need doing. And I would try and I would be that person that had to do, like, everything from scratch. And there's a time and a place to do things from scratch, and there's a time and place to, like, shortcut it and, like, you know, buy the cupcakes and not like handmade them. You know? That kind of thing. And it's about knowing what truly matters for you in a bigger picture, but also in the day to day and on that project. And I think we put so much pressure on ourselves to do it all. We just put so much pressure on ourselves to do everything from scratch and everything perfect. Actually, just Stop prioritizing. Now that is true productivity. Productivity is not doing everything. Productivity is doing the right things. Yeah. And when you start to cut some of the crap that doesn't actually matter, you're gonna be more productive automatically. So I would say that would be like the 1st place to start. And I think you I think it's gonna be liberating for people going jingle, actually. I don't need to do that. I don't need to do that a 100% to that level or standard. And it's not that chopping a stand is or anything like that. It is just about knowing what matters to you or not. No, what's a value to you as well. Right? I've I've been very clear that my bad using life are things like learning, having fun. So if it falls into one of those categories, I'm going up for it. If it doesn't, I don't wanna do it. Yeah. So I also think as well, from a practical perspective, knowing your energy drain is in fillers, everyone's different. So things that light me up are gonna be very different from the next person. So I think that light me up and things like this are like chatting and podcasting and connecting and collaborating So I get off these calls, and I'm I'm buzzing. Like, I'm, oh, but if I had to do, like, 2 hours of accounts, I'd come off that drained and be like, oh my god, like, possibly glass of wine. So I couldn't do a whole day's worth of accounts. Right? They're the kind of tasks that I would have to chop up and spread across the week, but I could be on Zoom calls, 10 hours straight, and still be vibing high. So it's about knowing your energy drainers and villas, which also takes me on to another tip of knowing your natural ebbs and flows. So if you are starting to feel a bit, me energy's talking here. That's natural. That's normal. That doesn't mean grab a cup of coffee and keep plowing on. That means let me take a break. Let me switch up change environment, pop to a coffee shop, go for a walk, maybe switch out for an easier task. That's not so like brain drain y. So I think we just we need to kinda listen to ourselves more as well. So that that would be like my start in tips.

Karen Davies [00:39:25]:

I'm sitting here thinking, because this morning, I was was having to do some some, tasks that I I don't mind them, but it requires a lot of me having a thing, you know, like, I've got proposals to write and things like that. I don't particularly enjoy that kind of thing. I would rather be creating or designing. That's where I get my Yeah. My lift if you like. And, and I was thinking, you know, I don't know if I can do this right now. And it's almost allowing yourself the permission to be like, you know what? I'm gonna put pin in this. I'm gonna come back to you later because right now, if this is a start, I can't bring to table what I need to bring in order to get this task done. So I need to say I haven't got those tasks time. I did put it on there. But, yeah, it's just like I say, it's listening to yourself, isn't it? And, you know, I'm just standing what your body's trying to tell you, and and and they give yourself permission to to be okay with that and to listen to it and go and do something else.

Alice Dartnell [00:40:23]:

Yeah. And it's very difficult for the procrastination. It's very different from going, oh, no. I need to do it, and I'm not. And I keep putting it off. You know, that's just pure procrastination. And we can sometimes mask procrastination with activity by don't know, jumping on social media or like cleaning out the kitchen cupboard, and we're like, oh, see, I'd be mad to you. And, again, that's why I'm like,

Karen Davies [00:40:42]:

I feel like you're watching me. I feel like you know who

Alice Dartnell [00:40:44]:

I can't say. It's like really knowing what is gonna move the needle forward. Right? Being honest with yourself, and don't you know what? I'm not bringing my age against this proposal. We're putting a pin on it. I'll come back to that tomorrow or the day after. So, actually, what I'm gonna do instead is is blah blah blah. That is that is different. That is energy management, and that is gonna serve you so well.

Karen Davies [00:41:06]:

There are things that I do. There's key things that I do that I love to do. And I always find myself, it's almost like you refilling the cup just by them. And one of my favorite things to do, because I because I'm a designer. I design in, but I love it when I put my music on, I put my favorite music on, I'm a real country fan, so I love it. I love it. I've got I gave my playlist I go to, and then I I I shut the door. I just put my music on full blast sitting there singing away, creating whatever it is I'm creating. And then, oh my god, I'm like on cloud 9. That that to me is where where my happy place is. So, yeah, I guess it's kind of figuring out, isn't it, where that place is for you as well? And then spending some time there because that's where you're gonna get that that rescheduled, isn't it?

Alice Dartnell [00:41:52]:

Yeah. And I've got another little sniffing tip for your listeners, actually, which I've got a credit to my client, Jamie. This is his tip. He actually color coded his diary, because he just was so long ago there's too many any drum, any hydrone is in my day.

Karen Davies [00:42:07]:

Yeah.

Alice Dartnell [00:42:07]:

So he color coded his diary. And if there was too much gray, right, because that was Yeah. Color coded. If it was too much gray in one day, You changed it because I need to make an active visit to see. Oh, Tuesday. I don't know if

Karen Davies [00:42:20]:

she's joining day. She's been really aware, isn't it? Like you say, I'm I'm with you. I can't do accounts. I hate accounts. I hate bookkeeping. I hate anything like that. I'm anything to do with numbers. I'm just not, like, it doesn't being aware of that and then, like, not avoiding it, but but just maybe that is a thing that you could do at a time when maybe you're more geared to do it and just Yeah. I'd say and then taking ownership of your calendar. So, right, rather than running a to do list, maybe it's an energy list, maybe it's a case of right. Okay. Which in the morning, this is how I feel So these are the tasks that best suit that time. And and, you know, in the evening, you're gonna do X Y And Z and just Yep. Taking ownership over that, I guess, as well.

Alice Dartnell [00:43:01]:

Yes. And and especially if you are a business owner, you've got a bit more control of your diary. Like, I've got a really, really long day today because obviously with overlap in England and stuff like that. So I'm gonna be waiting to go back midnight tonight. That's okay. I've done that. That's like choice. So I took 4 hours out this afternoon to, have a call with one of my mates, go to the gym, and I that arrived and refreshed to me. So, yeah, I won't be raring to go until midnight tonight for the next 6 hours because I've I know what fills me energy and fills me up and love them.

Karen Davies [00:43:35]:

So just moving away from running a task list, just thinking about things a little bit differently and and kind of approaching it in a way that is more serving to you, right, as opposed to kind of draining, which is what we wanna avoid at all costs. And I I've been there at burnout and it's not fun. So if we can avoid it, then then we must do, in whatever way possible. So thank you so much for sharing. I will obviously share your details.
